A Blue Perspective: Strongbad RSS

Ahhh, the joy of visiting the Denny's Menu and seeing that another installment of sb_email.exe has been added to the Homestar Runner canon. It is an excitement rarely equalled in online life.

But the infrequency with which Strongbad cranks up his email console is often maddening. Stretches of 3 or more weeks have been known to pass before he graces us with his delectable derision once again. The Homestar Runner team seem blissfully unaware of RSS, but thankfully someone at Interglacial stepped in, parsed Homestar's XML file and produced an RSS feed of all Homestar Runner content.

Thing is, I only really want to hear about Strongbad Emails; that's the gold. So, I ran Interglacial's RSS through Yahoo Pipes to get a feed of Strongbad Emails, and in the process proved to myself that Yahoo Pipes is actually pretty good :D

A pretty simple pipe in the scheme of things, but here you go: RSS for Strongbad Emails.

Awesome stuff Cam, the lack of Strongbad RSS always annoyed me, too

Neat-o! Although, I wont be subscribing to that feed. For me, the inability to track homestarrunner updates is a feature - the surprise of it all!

One day you'll go there and hunt around for 10 minutes only to realise there is nothing new to see - but other days a treasure-trove of new goodies is there to be discovered!

Um, but maybe that's just me.

Yeah, I was like that for a while, Earle. But then I just totally forgot to check Homestar Runner, and ended up with way too much backlog to enjoy.

    Subscribed. That's awesome, thanks Cam.

(Aside: there's a Homestar Runner video podcast listed in the iTunes store, which is mainly SB emails, with a bit of Teen Geek Squad stuff thrown in occasionally.)

Excellent use of Pipes! Thanks for sharing it Cameron!

You might be interested in an entry I wrote about Pipes, Popfly, Google Mashup Editor, and an analysis of some of the ways RSS mashups are going to change the way we receive information on the web. It's called, "More Signal, Less Noise: The Power of RSS Mashups", and you can find it at:

Hope it's useful to you, I'd love to hear your thoughts or some of the other ways you use Pipes.

I really like the Yahoo Pipes program, being able to mash up so much content and easily read it, is priceless.
